A razor is a device used for cutting hair and it’s a crucial part of a person’s life in India, which has some of the world’s highest rates of female genital mutilation (FGM).
A new report says that as many as two-thirds of all women in India are subjected to FGM in a bid to make their bodies more beautiful.
“A razor is not a black box to the women.
It’s a device for their protection.
There are thousands of these in the country,” said Akshay Srivastava, co-founder of the Center for Health, Gender and Sexuality Research (CHGSR), an NGO that works on the rights of women in the nation.”
We have been saying for the last two decades that we want to reduce FGM and it is a very important part of the health care system,” he told Al Jazeera.”
It is used to make the women’s bodies more attractive and we need to change the culture to reduce this,” he added.
In the state of Uttar Pradesh, the number of cases of FGM has increased significantly from 5,813 cases in 2015 to 19,812 in 2016.
India is home to more than 40 million people, but about 70 percent of them are FGM-compliant.
It is a practice that was introduced in the 1950s and was considered a religious duty.
According to the National Family Health Survey 2015-16 released by the National Centre for Health Statistics, India had a total of 1,826 FGM cases.
In Uttar Pradesh alone, 2,907 cases were recorded in the state in 2016, the highest since the survey began in 2001.
According the survey, FGM was practiced by just 3 percent of the population, and the proportion is lower in Bihar, Maharashtra and West Bengal.
Women in India do not have the same rights as women in other parts of the country.
They are not able to take time off work, or work outside the home without supervision.
They have to obtain the consent of their husbands to do things such as changing a diaper or shaving their head, and they have to submit their dowry receipts to the family.
In India, women are not allowed to drive, while men can.
The number of domestic violence cases has risen sharply over the last few years, with the number reaching 1,500 last year, up from a peak of more than 1,300 in 2012.
The number of women being married has increased by more than 100 percent in the last 15 years.
There were an estimated 7.9 million women married in 2015, according to the Census of India.
“In the last couple of years, there has been a sharp increase in the number, especially in the rural areas,” Srivac said.
Women, he added, often have to stay at home when their husbands go out.
This has created a situation where husbands often do not know where their wives are.
“The husband is often very scared, and there is a lot of pressure for him to be there.
He is afraid to leave the house,” Sravastava said.”
When he comes home from work, he will ask for a phone call from his wife.”
He added that when he was working, he could not have a single interaction with his wife and would feel helpless.
This is why he has decided to work on reducing FGM.
“It’s something that should be addressed,” Sivastava added.
“Women are a part of this society and they are being violated.
We need to look at the culture that is creating this culture.
We should take the culture of our society and put it in practice.
We can’t just talk about the health system but the culture is what’s causing this.”
Srivastav said the FGM law was not in place in India in the past, but he felt that there was no way to address the problem.
“I feel the laws are not up to the job.
The government can’t do anything to stop the practice,” he said.
Srivac added that he did not know the exact number of female circumcision procedures performed in India and it could be much higher.
According TOI, an online health data portal, the incidence of female circumcisions in India has risen to a peak in 2012, when an estimated 11.1 million women underwent the procedure.
However, according the latest census of India, in 2017, the total number of FMCG surgeries performed in the population stood at 1,732, an increase of almost 10 percent.
The total number is much higher than that of any other country.
According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, in the United States, there were about 5.2 million FMCGs performed in 2015.
According a 2017 study by the World Health Organisation, FMCGB is the most commonly performed and the most prevalent form of female sexual mutilation in the world.
